Description
Chic, contemporary design with an emphasis on style; passionate chefs heatedly perfecting new recipes; a mountain and ocean view whilst sipping on espresso. One would be forgiven for thinking one was dining in an exclusive restaurant in the heart of Rome, but this refreshing take on fine Italian dining is located right in South Africa at one of the most picturesque locations in the country - the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. Meloncino offers an Italian experience to South Africans and Italians alike.Meloncino offers unique Italian cuisine. It has crossed the proverbial Rubicon, leaving the traditional pasta and pizza eateries in its wake. As always, the success of a restaurant lies with the people behind it, who bring an idea into being. Co-owners Anthony Protoulis and Paolo Carrara were inspired by their fathers' devotion to food. The three imported chefs from Rome, Andrea, Luciano and Roberto, ensure only the highest quality.

It would be a mistake to assume Meloncino is yet another traditional "trattoria". New generation Italy is about pushing boundaries in style, design and craftsmanship. This is visible in the design of the restaurant which is both dramatic and elegant. The restaurant is deconstructivist in style with a series of lines purposely angled to draw one's view towards Table Mountain and the Cape Town Harbour. The intersecting lines create zones with different functions. Central to the restaurant is the dynamic shard-like bar around which other sections hinge. Dining areas range from lounge areas overlooking the harbour, to formal dining sections and privés. Diners also have available to them a superb wine collection and a deli full of authentic Italian produce. An open-fire grill or "brace" and wood-fire oven ensure that food is cooked the way it would be in Italy. The presentation of food is architectural with attention paid to the smallest detail.

The food itself; it is close to impossible to do justice to it with mere words. The restaurants signature dish, Tagliata di Manzo alla Righetto - sliced grilled sirloin steak topped with fresh rockets, cherry tomato and shavings of Parmesan cheese cooked on the "brace" - is an obvious choice to try. If you feel like pasta, the Spaghetti Scoglio with its seafood, cherry tomato and chilli served in a transparent wrapping, won't disappoint. Or, if you not too hungry try the Roman (thin) and Napoletan (thick) style pizzas, or salads.Meloncino epitomises the merging of generations. Contemporary interpretations of classic dishes, Italian design principles combined with the age old emphasis on craftsmanship, form and function. At Meloncino, you really could be forgiven for thinking you are in Italy!

Kruger Park - Sirheni
Kruger Park - Sirheni (Website)

'Sirheni' is a Tsonga word that means 'cemetery', after a type of elephant graveyard at a site near to the camp. Sirheni Bushveld Camp nestles on the edge of the Kruger National Park's northern plains within the Mopane veld of the region. The Sirheni Dam, on the Mphongolo River, lies next to the camp. The accommodation facilities and the camp's two bird hides overlook the dam and a wide variety of game and birds are attracted to it. Visitors have been awakened to the sounds of lion and hyena, as there are often kills at the dam. Sirheni has a resident leopard that is seen on a regular basis, often coming down to drink at the dam.
