Description
The well known Paternoster Hotel is situated on the West Coast of South Africa in the fishing village of Paternoster a 145km from north of Cape Town. The original building was built in 1863 by the community with limestone from the area. In those days it served as a 'mall' with a clothing store, jail/holding cell, entertainment (snooker tables). The present dining room was used for dances and church services and the function hall was an open area used by the local farmers to store their corn.During the years the property changed various hands until in 1973 Johan Carosini bought the hotel and transformed it into the legend the Paternoster Hotel is today. Johan and his son Giorello are still the proud owners of the Hotel.

The Restaurant is open to Hotel and day visitors 7 days a week. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the dining room or outside on the veranda only 2 minutes walk from the beach. The Paternoster Hotel pride themselves on preparing delicious seafood dishes, especially crayfish and stock a selection of local wines from the region. Braai facilities and traditional seafood braais are available on request and need to be booked in advance. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly with a personal touch and lots of olden day charm. No bookings are taken for groups under 10 and no reservations at all during the high season times.

The Paternoster Hotel has a unique and famous pub that first served as the Paternoster jail. In 1974 Johan Carosini started the collection of "honeymoon panties". The panty collection had to be taken down in June 1983 after a Dominee/Reverend had tea at the hotel and reported this "unholy" practice to the police. Needless to say the policeman who was responsible for the confiscation of the panties, was thereafter called "Panty' Basson by everyone who knew. The collection was once again started in the nineties by Johan's son and now co owner Giorello and is still flourishing today.

Kruger Park - Pretoriuskop
Kruger Park - Pretoriuskop (Website)

When the world was still young, some 3 500 million years ago, molten rock forced its way through the earth's crust and solidified to form the spectacular granite outcrops where Pretoriuskop Rest Camp is now nestled. The impressive granite dome known as "Shabeni Hill" is not far from the camp, which is found in the south-western corner of the Kruger National Park. It is immediately apparent to any visitor that Pretoriuskop is unique as brilliant red trees adorn the camp, pre-dating the decision to make exclusive use of indigenous plants in laying out rest camp gardens. Nostalgia prompted an exception to the rule for Pretoriuskop, the Kruger National Park's oldest rest camp, and exotic flowering plants were allowed to stay, enhancing the strong sense of the past that is so pervasive.
